Building A Prayer Life

Discussion Guide

Before We Begin

Today our goal is to discover the joy of deeper connection with God through prayer. Let’s create a safe space to share our experiences and encourage one another.

Opening Reflection

Think back to a meaningful conversation you’ve had with someone you trust. What made it special? Prayer can be like that – a heart-to-heart with God.

Key Scripture References

  • “Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” – Philippians 4:6
  • “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.” – Ephesians 6:18
  • “Men ought always to pray and not lose heart.” – Luke 18:1

Insights from Christian Leaders

Watchman Nee shares:
“Our prayers lay the track down which God’s power can come. The power of God comes like a mighty locomotive. The rails it travels on are our prayers. We were created to have conversations with God.”

Dr. Myles Munroe reminds us:
“Prayer is an expression of mankind’s unity and relationship of love with God. An expression of mankind’s affirmation of and participation in God’s purposes for the earth”

Charles H. Spurgeon encourages:

  • “The best praying man is the man who is most believingly familiar with the promises of God. After all, prayer is nothing but taking God’s promises to him, and saying to him, ‘Do as thou hast said.'”
  • “Not to pray because you do not feel fit to pray is like saying, ‘I will not take medicine because I am too ill.'”
  • “If I feel myself disinclined to pray, then is the time when I need to pray more than ever.”

Billy Graham simply states:
“Praying is simply talking with God. You can bring him your challenges. You can thank him for providing for you, You can tell him your sorrows.”

Andrew Murray reminds us:

  • “The great thing in prayer is to feel that we are putting our supplications into the bosom of omnipotent love.”
  • “The root of all virtue and grace, of all faith and acceptable worship, is that we know that we have nothing but what we receive and bow in deepest humility to wait upon God for it.”

Promises of Prayer

  1. Just as a loving parent delights in conversation with their child, God eagerly listens when we pray and notices our steps of faith. (Hebrews 4:16)
  2. Prayer opens a direct line of heartfelt communication with God – it’s central to our walk with Him. (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
  3. God invites us to bring everything to Him in prayer – our joys, fears, hopes, and needs. (Philippians 4:6)
  4. Our Father responds to all kinds of prayers in all sorts of situations. (1 John 5:14)
  5. When we make prayer a regular part of our day and weave Scripture into our conversations with God, we grow closer to His heart and better understand His plans for us. (Joshua 1:8)

Discussion Questions

  1. When you talk to God, what makes you feel most heard? What sometimes makes you wonder if He’s listening?
  2. What helps you stay engaged and find joy in prayer?
  3. What does it mean to you personally to “abide” in Jesus?
  4. How do you view prayer? Are there any misconceptions about prayer that you’re wrestling with?
  5. What one step could you take this week to deepen your connection with God through prayer?

Prayer Time Together

Each person will have an opportunity to pray briefly:

Adoration: Praise God for who He is
Thanksgiving: Express gratitude for something specific
Supplication: Pray for a friend, co-worker, neighbor, or loved one

Remember: Prayer doesn’t end here. Continue this conversation with God in your own time, including moments of confession – acknowledging our mistakes, fears, and most importantly, our need for Him.

Personal Application

Homework:

  1. Take some quiet time to identify any thoughts or worries that might be dampening your faith or making it harder to trust God in prayer. Bring these to Him and ask for His peace.
  2. Look at your daily routine. Are there any activities that could be adjusted to create more space for prayer and time in God’s Word? What changes might help you prioritize these moments with Him?

Closing Thought

Remember: Prayer isn’t about perfect words or following a formula – it’s about sharing your heart with a Father who loves you deeply and longs to hear from you. He’s always ready to listen.
